Is there anything special that has to be done when installing a new carrier? Other than the backlash setting, nothing else should be touched correct? And on Dodges can't a guy just count how many turns the adjuster nuts are backed off, and turn them back the same amount to keep the backlash setting the same?

nothing else needs to be changed besides the backlash. keeping the same number of turns on the nuts is a good reference to start, it should be pretty close, so start out with that then fine tune it after checking the ring and pinion bite. pretty easy!!

Probably the same crap the military puts on metal stuff for long term storage. Cosmoline? Or some such. It's actually fairly effective, when applied correctly.... which it doesn't appear to have been on the diff..... there shouldn't be any rust.
