The pulley is attached to the balancer with 6 bolts. Remove the bolts and the pulley will pop off.

The bolt holding the balancer on is threaded normally. Mine popped right off using an impact gun.

Another option to keep the crank from turning while you're working on the bolt is to use something like this. I used the pulley bolts to attach it to the balancer, then used a 1/2" breaker bar to keep the crank from turning.

Once you get the bolt out, you'll have to use a puller to remove the balancer.

**** that damn bolt for the harmonic balancer that **** would not come off. I finally got it off i tryed everything so i called a buddy of mine and he brought his impact wrench and than i closed up shop covered everything with a tarp and cracked a 12 pack. Today was no where as smooth as yesterday. I whent to my truck took off the A/C comressor and bracket broke a ****ing connecter clip in the process than removed the water pump. the pulley wheel to the crank shaft was rusted on the harmonic balancer pretty bad i undid all the bolts yet it wouldnt move so i said **** it and begin to see my day go by in wasted attempts at the harmonic balancer bolt. first didnt have a socket whent to a friends house to pick one up it didnt fit so whent to auto zone and picked up a bigger size whent back to my truck but couldnt get the initial break however in the process i knocked off the rusted on pulley wheel. after trying with a breaker bar and with liquid wrentch i put a couple bolts back in the pulley and tied ratchet straps to the power steering pump pulley to try and stop the pulley/harmonic balancer from moving. I than put a torch on it to try and heat it up and break it. well eventually hrs later i called a friend he came over with his impact wrench and zip zip zip he broke it and got it off. now its dark tomorrow im getting up early and im going to pull off the harmonic balancer open the timing chain cover replace my chain with a double roller clean everything up add my new gaskets and thermostat and close this what turned out to be a 3 day project

Btw to keep the balencer from turning... go under the truck remove the starter on the transmission, take off the inspection plate. Get a pry bar or something and wedge it between the flexplate to keep the engine from turning. That will stop the balencer from spinning..

You are going to have to do this in order to put that big bolt back on properly. You have to torque it to i believe it was 90 or 95 ft lbs. It doesnt seem like a lot but thats what the specs are. The only way your going to torque it is by holding the flexplate still. So this will be a 2 person project or 1 if you can manage to wedge it good enough by yourself.

Also dont forget to line up the old chain with the 2 dots facing eachother. (crank the engine to do that by putting the big balencer bolt back in to turn the engine ) Then gently pull the old chain off being carefull not to move the camshaft up top that the big gear sits on. Then put the new chain on exactly like the old one came off, with the 2 dots lined up being carefull not to move the camshaft that the big gear goes on.

I forgot to the torque specs for the bolt holding the gear in place. Oh and if your taking the timing cover off without remove the oil pan, be sure you use a little rtv on the exposed oil pan gasket when it you set the timing cover back on it. Oh and put a rag or something over the oil pan lip that will be sticking out so when you scrap the old gasket off and clean "CLEAN !" the surfaces you dont get stuff in the oil.

Did you get the felpro gasket set btw ? You should replace the front main seal on the timing cover while your at it.. Its a little tricky to get it on tho

Damn near finished the job everything is reassembled just have to get my stupid fan clutch off my old water pump than i can put it to the new front end of motor and connect my negative battery.. noone in this stupid town has a wrench big enough the book said 36mm but thats horse **** because the 36mm still had play i whent to autozone to napa to sears noone has a wrench about 34mm to get the clutch off so im going to take it to work tomorrow we have big injection mold machines so the set up supervisor for mold room should have a big enough wrench.... the job was fairly easy the BIGGEST BULL**** was not having the proper tools. The bolt to the harmonic balancer took about 5 hrs and my futile attempts at the fan clutch took another three before i said **** this and took the water pump out with it on (i had a new water pump anyways) i didnt get to put a new timing chain (other bills are more of a priority) but i did the gasket that was leaking the water pump and new gasket new 180 thermostat all new hoses and clean alot of other **** while i was there oh and i discovered another gasket that needs to be replaced my oil pan where the timing chain cover goes was split i put some rtv for now next week ill do an oil change and change the gasket. the first day i was excited to start, the second day i fought with the harmonic balancer bolt (which lead to me and a six pack of coors light) by the third day i was just like **** this all this **** for a stupid gasket!!!! all in all im glad i did it i saved like 3 to 4 hundred doing it myself. I learned a whole lot and now if i ever need to go back at least all the bolts wont be rusted on again makes for easier access (just have to pick up the tool for the fan clutch or fabricate one at work)

Don't get discouraged. Sometimes the lessons learned make the trouble worth it later. Having the proper tools makes any job a little easier, and some of us have been collecting tools for years - and still need something else when we start a project. A man can NEVER have too many tools, and se;dom has enought......imho....

Getting the things done that you did were important, and you being able to have done it yourself is something to be commended. Good job.

Open photobucket, and click on upload photo. Select album (or create album) and then selct My COmputer and search for photo on your computer. Click on photo to upload, let it run, then click save. Once phot is uploaded, go to that photo in PB, and you will see some links. Click on link marked "img" and it should say "copied
there. Come back to DF, and paste link into thread text. Wooolaa! Done.
