Default Dakota lsd in a 1500?

I know some 2nd gen v8 4x4 dakotas come with lsd and have chrystler 9 1/4 rear axles. I was wondering if I could go to the junk yard and tear the rear end out of a dakota and use my pinion gear and use it in my truck?

Call a dealer and get part numbers for each - see if it is a match.

I'm interested to see where this goes, sounds like a good idea if they're compatible...

If they are the same then how the heck do I get the rear carrier our? I know if you pry on the front hard enough it will come out but when I replaced my spiders last year I couldn't get the rear out.

I called the dodge garage and they just told me to pry but it would move freely for like an inch or two and then it wouldn't go any farther...that's with sliding the axle shafts out and taking out those 4 bolts holding those two clips in (I forget what they are actually called).

You probably need to loosen the carrier bearing adjusters.

Where are those at, inside the axle shafts?

I think.... they are on either side of the diff housing, are threaded, and are against the carrier bearings. You should be able to see them with the caps off.

If you have not done it already, remove the bearing caps. Take out the two 11m bolts for the thread adjuster locks, and use a screwdriver to rotate the adjusters out to lossen the tension on the differential. Be careful, bc once the tension is gone, the assembly will want to fall out onto the ground. (almost happened to me)
