Shift Kit Scare
Bought a transgo shift kit this past summer and was thinkin about getting it put in over the break. I've got 179xxx and original tranny. Started calling around though and all of the shops tell me that if I put that in I can pretty much kiss my tranny goodbye. Kinda thinking ill just be making a return to summit.
179+ on the ORIGINAL transmission is pretty damn GOOD. '01 5.2? Probably a 46RE huh?
My old '98 K1500 had a shift kit installed, it would shift harder/firmer, which if I remember right is kinda the purpose, correct me if I'm wrong.
With that many miles on an original transmission from the 2nd Gen Ram era I'd be afraid to have anything done to it. Might open up a can of worms....
Just my $0.02

In general firmer shifts are better for the tranny...to a point. With firmer shifts the clutch bands will slip less, which is better, less wear, longer lasting. If you get too firm though, you'll tear up components.

No positive info on this subject except that mine has lasted 264,000 miles and may be getting ready to come unglued. Only thing that has ever been done is filter change so if you plan on waiting it out you could be waiting a while, my $.02
Put your truck info in yours signature line, and also in your profile. (sig doesn't show if you post from a cell phone.....) Doesn't hurt my feelings at all to see those kinds of numbers on one of these autos.... Suppose you are the guy that screws up the averages for the other folks rebuilding five times in the same mileage.

I'm pretty proud of my old truck, got a buddy with a diesel that doesn't believe it's the original motor and transmission, only major work done was head gaskets and were pretty sure it never seated right from the factory cuz it always had a random antifreeze smell
