Default 4wd dash light

What up peeps. I need some insight on this. I have a 97 ram 4x4 5.9 the 4wd dash light is on but 4wd is working properly. I put on jack stands it goes in and out of 4 wheel drive as it it should. Everything working properly. Anyone had this problem or know what it may be? Is front drive shaft supposed to turn in and out of 4wheel drive?

Front drive shaft should not turn in 2wd. (and it shouldn't turn in 2wd up on jackstands either....)

If the light in the dash is staying on, one of two things is going on. Either the switch in the cad is frozen, and not opening up when it should, or, the cad is not disengaging. (in which case, the lite is doing what it is supposed to.)

with the truck on jackstands, in 2wd, try spinning the passenger front tire. Nothing else should turn. If it doesn't, check the switch on the inboard side of the cad. (passenger side front axle. Has two little vacuum lines going to it, one fat vent line, and a two-wire electrical connector.) If other stuff turns....... then the cad isn't disengaging. Need to find out why.

Thanks a lot. When I truck is on Jack stands in two wheel drive the front drive shaft and front wheels do not turn but if you spin the front passenger side wheel the front drive shaft turns and while I am driving down the road in two wheel drive the front drive shaft is spinning so does that mean that it is not disengaging in the front axle?

It does sound like the front axle is not disengaging. Read this a verify correct operation of CAD. http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/repair/..._engagment.htm

Okay. Truck is now on jack stands. The transfer case is in 2 wheel drive and the front tires are not spinning. By Spinning each tire freely passenger side and driver side it turns the drive shaft. I Remove the actuator on the front axle and the fork had the axles lock. While I was removing the actuator I broke the red vacuum line. I plan on replacing the vacuum lines completely but I'm not sure if the actuator is bad or is the vacuum is bad. Does anyone know how the actuator works? Does the vacuum operate it both ways in and out of 4wd? When you put the transfer case in 4 wheel drive Does it create a vacuum and engage the actuator how does it disengage? Trying to figure out if actuator is bad.
