Default K, I looked through the FAQ. How do I know what gear I have?

I read the tire size thread. I am convinced that I need to buy 285/75/16 for my Ram. (No lift, though I am going to with a leveling kit.)

I read in there that one guy didn't like the MPGs he got with the 3.55 gear with those tires.

So. Did 3.55 come stock from the factory? I have an 01 Dodge Ram Sport 1500 4x4 with the 5.9L.

Any help would be appreciated.

You most likely have 3.55, however, to find out for sure assuming there weren't changes beforehand get yo build sheet son!

3.55s were stock, but, there were some optional ratios available as well. Rumor has it there is a sticker somewhere on the truck that will tell you.... I think its under the hood, or, possibly in the glove box.. If you can't find it there, get a build sheet from chrysler. That will tell you what it came from the factory with.

If no one's removed it, you'll find an aluminum tag hanging off one of the differential cover bolts with a number on it. There may be two tags, but the one you're interested in will have a number like 3.5 or 3.9 or 4.1. That's your axle ratio. 3.5 = 3.55, 3.9 = 3.92, etc.

The other tag is the build date.

It depends on how you do it; there are two ways to go about it. One is to use thick cut gears for the front Dana 44 diff. The other is to replace the front gear carrier.

That said
Two 4.10 gear sets @ $250 approx. ea. Dana 44 thick cut gear, opt 1

Two master install kits @ $150 approx. ea

New Dana 44 gear carrier for 4.10 ratios $250 and up, opt 2

Labor to install would start @ $600 approx. per diff

By the time you are done it will be about $2000.00

There ya go. You aren't going to find a better price. That is one HELL of a good deal, for all that you get. If I had a half ton truck, I would JUMP on that.
