If you tighten and leave tight, the band will always hold the outer drum and not let it spin when it should. When the servo engages, it will calmp the band at appropriately. If you back off too far, you may exceed the stroke length of the servo. Not enough and you will have the band rubbing on the drum all the time and cause excessive wear.

The FSM that is availabe for download in the FAQ/DIY section had a very well written transmission service and rebuild section. I printed this section out and put is plastic sheet protectors to keep with me when i used it to rebuild my tranny.

Thanks for the explanation. Makes perfect sense. I've always enjoyed working on cars, but I've never had to do a lot of the stuff I'm having to do on this truck and I figure that as long as I'm doing it, I might as well try to understand how stuff works. I appreciate everyone's knowledge and willingness to help.

The saga continues... I've buttoned everything up and followed all the instructions. Now it feels like the rpms go way too high before it shifts, especially from 2nd - 3rd (around 3500) and when it does shift, it almost feels like it's in shift purgatory. It doesnt feel like a solid shift... almost like it eases into the next gear too much.

Rear end should have nothing to do with that. Been into your trans lately? Changed fluid/filter?

Sorry, this thread somehow turned into a tranny thread. I did just change my fluid and filter and adjusted the bands as per Haynes manual, but now I'm experiencing these symptoms.

Wonder if you mis-adjusted the bands.... that's what it sounds like.

How did the fluid look? Find anything strange in the pan?

Fluid looked fine, and nothing foreign in the pan. I'm really hoping that it's just a front band mis-adjustment so that I don't have to drop the pan again...
Front band deals with 1st-2nd and 2nd-3rd shifts?

Rear band is for manual first, and reverse only.... try adjusting up the front again.

Alright. Readjusted the front band - 72in/lb and backed off 2 and 7/8. It's a little better in that it's not letting the ingine rev as high, but it takes about 4 seconds from the start of the shift until its completed - meaning that I can feel it shift at around 2100-2200, then it takes about 4 seconds for RPMS to dop back to about 1800. Would this mean that the bad isn't tight enough and is slipping?

Or the governor pressure solenoid is getting clogged up..... or failing.
