Default Trans slips from 1-2, Truck stalls when stopped

Hi there,

I have been looking all over for answers. I've got a 95 1500 with 84,000. 2wd auto. Trans was serviced about 40,000 ago.

Trouble I've been having is when I go to drive off, when it is shifting from 1st to 2nd gear the transmission acts like it's in neutral then BAM it catches and goes into second. It does that for the longest time and always seems to let out when I'm in the middle of an intersection. THEN, when I'm in drive sitting at a red light, it's like the TC locks up and stalls out the truck. Could this whole problem be the TC? Doesnt seem to leak/burn oil internally, - only leaks oil out of the output shaft speed sensor... And the oil does not smelt burnt.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

First thing to do here is to check your fluid level.....It checks in the neutral position....If fluid is checked in Park, it WILL NOT check correctly.....Low fluid will cause those symptoms..

Fluid level checks good. I'm not sure if the bands are adjusted. I'm thinking no but really don't know. Would that cause all those problems?

Band adjustment for the band in question is external on the drivers side....loosen the adjustment lock nut and snug the adjustment bolt, then back off 2 turns..Re tighten the lock nut...done..

if it stalls at stops My money is on a bad torque converter... its likely self destructed by now leaving non magnetic shards of metal in the pan by now... look there for evidence of this. they will plug up valve body passages quickly causing other problems... if you get a code reader on it you will likely find errors even without a check engine light. (I did both times my tranny acted up) BTW I just had the stalling thing happen recently on my ram and was the converter as it those symptoms were also the converter twice before on my old company vans.. tranny need a rebuild at this point.

worn clutch bands have nothing to do with stalling at stops (think about it) the clutch material on these trannies is very thin and adjusting them has a very minimal effect unless done wrong and over tightened..... doing the adjustment wrong can speed up other failures fast... I recommend against this at this point.

You are 100% correct auggiedoggy, bands will not have anything to do with the stalling, And there is a good chance his trans needs repaired, its just he said that when he was sitting at a red light ,then the stalling occured..If the stalling occurs after the stop, then the problem may be somewhere else..If the stalling is occuring during the stop ( such as a result like a clutch pedal not being pressed in a manual trans vehicle), then yep, stopped up tcc solenoid usually from the result of a converter breaking apart..

Hey guys,

Thanks for the info. Ok so lets say I drove up to a redlight and stopped with the truck in drive. Truck is idleing normal, then all of a sudden the TC or something locks up and stalls the truck. I forgot to mention that also sometimes when I go from stop to go in Drive, it just rev's up and nothing happens until it catches and BANGS.

So if my TC is shot, the trans will be filled with all those metal shards? Rebuild necessary or just a professionally done flush? Also someone mentioned a solenoid?

Thanks!!
