Stock regulator is back at the tank. Probably works the same way an air pressure regulator does. No return line on those either.

So then could a regulator that operates like the stock one be installed outside of the pump assembly?

Stock regulator sits on top of the fuel pump module, and is nominally "outside" the tank. I am not entirely sure exactly HOW it works. It may simply dump excess fuel right back into the tank.

Ok, thats what i was kind of thinking, I wasn't sure if possibly installing a regulator further down the line away from the tank (for accessibility reasons) and maybe running a return line for the access fuel straight from the regulator back to the pump? If that makes since?

If you want the remote regulator to do the right tricks, need to disable/bypass the current one....

Running a return line would be a simple matter...... worst case would be, installing a fitting on the tank to run the line to.

As I have a few xtra pumps here let me know how I can help. I have one pump that I can and will tear apart for us to go over.

I would be most interested in how difficult it would be to simply remove the filter/regulator, and go with just a straight hose/line from there. Size of the internal line would be good to know as well, so if ya wanna run a larger than stock line, you know how deep you have to dig.

So here you go, I disassembled a fuel pump and this is what I found. The fuel line is 3/8 external dia and is ¼ inside dia. As you see in the one pix there is a blue nipple on the bottom of the pump that is the over pressure fuel return, it is built right into the pump.

interesting. So, the stock pump would have to be replaced as well. Shouldn't be too difficult to find something else to fit in there though.

1/4 inch fuel line ID???? Holy smoke, that's TINY. It's a wonder the stock pump can feed a 408.....
