Default 1500 cracked transfer case rear retainer

Specs: 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 V8 5.9 Transfer case: NP231D

My question is do I have to remove the complete transfer case to replace the cracked rear retainer? The extension appears to be fine. Who would you recommend for replacement parts? I am hoping the rear cover of the case is not cracked as well. Appreciate any help. Thanks

My Ram is 2wd, so I am not sure. I have seen threads that mention "case saver" and it may be your answer. Try to search case saver and see if that is it.

Welcome to DF!

i'm not sure what you mean by the rear retainer??

if you're referring to the snap ring on the rear output shaft, then you only need to remove the driveshaft and tail housing. here's some pics.

if the rear half of the case is cracked, then i think? the whole thing has to come out. ask zman, he's had his apart.

I had to work on my wife's Grand Cherokee TC. I took it out. It was pretty light after I drained the fluid, and I knew I could get to everything really easy on my work bench instead of under the jeep on my back. It took me 45 min to remove it, and 40 mins's to put it back on.

Unless it is an output seal or snap ring.

Picture is worth a 1000 words. On the diagram I'm looking at part #35. I wasn't sure if the broken part could be removed and replaced with out having to drop the whole transfer case. I've replaced ball joints, u-joints and tie rods is this something over my abilities? Thanks for the tips.

You should be able to do that without dropping the t-case, though, having it out of the truck would be easier....... I think the biggest thing you need to worry about is, WHY it cracked in the first place, and, is there any other damage done......

Even if you have to drop the case it can be done in about an hour. Might just wanna drop it and pull it apart to see what CAUSED it to crack in the first place.. Dont wanna replace things just to have it break again

I thought that was the problem with my truck, so I brought it in for warranty work. Ends up the TC itself was actually cracked but was dripping over part #35. Had that replaced in March 2011 when the truck had 50K on it.

BTW, I don't offroad and hardly use 4x4. It must have been due to the elements (Cold). It was a SF Bay Area california truck, then we moved to arkansas, and the winter was unusually cold. No telling how long it was leaking because I have the Transfer Case Skid Plate. Caught the drips very well. noticed it when I was going to do my fluid and filter drain.

I would take the whole thing out, clean it up and go over it with a magnifying glass.

While you're in there you'd do yourself a favor by installing a transfer case saver. Darn thing's worth its weight in gold.
