96 1500. was flushing the system and now my temp gauge will not move from the starting point. worked great yesterday but when i flushed i used prestone stuff and water and on the final flush with just water the temperature dropped really fast (Utah for you) now wont work. think the thermostat is frozen open so its actually never getting really hot? i drove for about forty min and could put my hand on cap (which was still cold) any ideas? heater i believe is just the heater core is clogged so im going to flush back and forth until hopefully get good heat transfer.

i bought a new thermostat and will replace tommorow since today was hit while working on it by this new snow storm. also is there any fuses that could be related to my temp gauge not working?

Check the connector at the sending unit. (its the single wire connector on the passenger side of the thermostat housing.) Mine did the same thing after doing the plenum, but, it was just due to the connector being dirty. Cleaned it up, wiggled it back on, gauge works fine now.

Should be right behind the alternator. It isn't easy to see/get to, but, you shouldn't have to remove anything to do so.

Not to be intrusive just curious. What engine are you dealing with? If you are on the 318 (5.2) and your 96 has Gen 1 ECU you could have two thermostats one for the guage and one for the CPU. THe one on the 1st Gen CPU equipped trucks for the temperatire guage is to the left of the one behind the thermostat housing. THe one for the CPU is directly behind the thermostat housing. I guess Ill learn something here.
