For the harmonic balancer. You can rent one from the parts store.

I'm not sure what year it changed, or if it did, but I had to hunt a "claw" style puller for my '01. We usually get by with a steering wheel puller but, it wouldn't work.

So that is affirmative that I do need a special tool. Is this claw style puller vehicle specific? I don't have a nearbye auto parts store to borrow it from so I will have to order it online. Any other tools I will need? besides for your basics?

That's the name I was getting at....... Also, you don't need a BIG one. A small one will work much better as room will be tight. (We borrowed one from one of our neighbor's and at first all we found was a HUGE one I'm guessing for diesel engine's.) We first called AutoZone and they didn't have a clue what I was talking about.....

Pulling from the outside edge can pull balancer apart.

DO NOT PULL ON THE OUTSIDE RING OF THE BALANCER - it will ruin it... i did this one time on a junk motor just to prove a point and it pulled the outer ring right off.

pull only on the inner portion using a duck foot style, or if the balancer will support it - a 3 jaw hooked on the INSIDE, not on the outside.

on the duck foot style, AKA steering wheel puller - don't allow the pointy shaft of the puller to damage the threads in the end of the crankshaft. thread in the crank bolt to protect the threads and push on the bolt head.

I failed to mention that you use the claw puller on the inside as dhvaughan stated.

Your balancer will either have thread holes or slots. Thread holes means you can use a steering wheel puller, slots means you use the 3 jaw puller
