Default Name that transmission noise

I am finding that when I start the truck cold if I put it in reverse it makes a world or racket. sorta like a loose shield vibrating. The noise tends to go away when things warm up. Any one have any ideas?

Stock exhaust? One of the welds for the heat shield for my spare broke and made a distinct rattle...the remedy was safety wire around it twisted tight to prevent movement sounds like a similar problem especially since it goes away after it gets warm

Transmission's can be a little noisy when they're cold. About 3 weeks ago we had some really cold weather and my truck would make a "whirling" noise only in reverse and only when it was cold.

Weather's been warmer so it hasn't done it since.

A mechanic friend of mine suggested that it might be the front overdrive having issues. This sounds like a much cheaper fix.

It's definitely the cheapest since its right near the redonk-ujoint.

There is no front overdrive. Get a buddy to drive or be the listener when this noise happens in order to better identify the location.

groaning, roaring, whining, and clacking in reverse when cold is a common problem. its addressed in a TSB to replace a seal or valve or something in the valve body. i'll find it in a minute.

verify its full of the correct ATF+4 fluid and beyond that, don't worry about it. you can prevent the noise by shifting to neutral for about 30 seconds before taking off for the first time.

if it was an actual mechanical clatter, it would do it all the time.

my truck gets a whining sound when i run down the highway and as the trucks lightly accelerates the transmission whines. i mean very lightly accelerate. when i let off the gas it goes away, it is driving me crazy. this tranny has 16000 miles on it. it should not be making noise.
