Transmission ID-build date help
Does anyone know how to decipher the build date number in the transmission ID numbers? I bought my first 2nd gen dodge (had a few 1st gens and loved em) from a buddy of mine with a bad transmission. Well I pulled the transmission and its obvious its been rebuilt before and it still said "core" on the top so im pretty sure its not the original trans. I need to find out the year of the trans before I order the parts for it.
The master rebuild kits for the 46re's are from 90-97 and 98-up so i need know the year of the trans. The truck is a 97 (nov-96 in the door jam) 5.9, 4x4. The trans ID is: PK52119517AA-0448-6549
I've done a ton of searches and all i can find is that the second set of numbers is the build date code, but i can't find out what the number arrangement is.
Is this a 98 trans? and if it is should i order a kit for a 97 or a 98?
I appreciate any help

Dealer should be able to translate code for you.
From the FSM:
Part Number:PK52119517AA-
Build Date:0448-
Serial Number:6549
I would guess 4/4/08

Thanks, but i was trying to get to the bottom of this if I can. If someone knows how to de-code it, others searching for this info like me can find this thread and no one else will have to bother the dealership.
edit- thanks, maybe 4/4/98?

When you find out from the dealer come back and let us know.

The dealer was no help at all, if the number isn't in their computer they are clueless. does anyone know the difference between the 97 and 98 46re?
I can't even find out what years used julian dates, my searches are turning up nothing but crap

Yeah, I can't find squat on trans casting numbers either....... If the trans worked ok (at least for a while) in your truck, just order parts for your year truck.

The scary thing is that the trans was really clean when i pulled it, it looks like it was just rebuilt, the torque converter looks brand new as well. I don't know if they used the wrong year parts or what. I'm guessing either the 44th day of the year 98 (0448) or 4/4/98 but i want to make sure. Something must be different between the 90-97 and 98-up transmissions because all the kits i see are divided with those years. I am ready to pull my hair out, i am waiting to build this trans just need the right parts.
Well, between 95, and 96... the trans changed from an RH (hydraulically governor) to the RE (96 model year, electronic governor) There are other minor differences in electronics.... but aside from that, I don't have a clue.
Might want to call the shop you are ordering parts from, and see if they can make any sense out of the numbers. Or maybe even a local trans shop.
