My truck just quit in the middle of an intersection and I had my dad tow me to the local service station.

The truck just stopped instantly like it ran out of fuel but without any sputtering. I turn the key now and it turns over just fine but never starts just keeps turning over.

I dont know if perhaps the fuel pump went out or maybe the crank position sensor.

Does anyone have any suggestion or quick checks I can do while it is in the service station parking lot?

 

Sorry, but you need test equipment, like a fuel pressure gauge for instance. The only thing I can think of is try banging on the the fuel tank and see if it starts.

 

I know this is dumb Q but do you have fuel in the tank?

 

Check for spark too. No special equipment required.

 

If your truck has a tach, crank the engine and see if it moves at all. If it doesn't move at all, or just very very slightly (like 50RPM), there's a good chance it's your crank position sensor.
I can't remember if the 99s have the key code trick, but if they do, you could see if the truck is throwing any codes. Most of the time, if its the crank position sensor, there will be a code. It would be easier if you happen to have a code reader.

 

As for fuel issues, you could get a can of starting fluid to spray down the intake. If it cranks, fires, and then dies, you have a fuel issue somewhere, whether that's the pump or sucking air somewhere.

 

Any chance there was a nuclear device detonated in the immediate area? The Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) would disrupt the electrical system of your vehicle. The best best way to tell is if every other vehicle in the surrounding area is non-operational as well as all electronic equipment unless it is located inside a shielded building.

The truck is not throwing any codes on my code reader. I replaced the in tank fuel pump less then a year ago and I know there is fuel in it.

I went back to the service station and the truck almost started up but then went back to just turning over.

Guessing that if it ALMOST started up its probably not the cPS and more than likely fuel related. Usually won't throw a code. When was the last time you fueled up? bad fuel? Also do you have an alarm system? Ive heard of those freaking out(even factory ones) and not allowing the engine to run. My 02 cummins shut down randomly on me one time. thought for sure it was the injection pump until i noticed the door locks didnt work. Checked fuse and sure enough it was blown. replaced it and fired over first try. Pulled it back out and it died. Go through your fuses just to make sure. swap asd relay for another same with fuel pump relay.
