transfer case rebuild?
Hi all,
1999 5.9 4x4 sport with new viper tranny (love the tranny!) NP231D transfer.
I was doing all the work switching the transmission out myself until i nearly cut my right index finger off (unrelated to working on truck btw!) and then had to hire out having my tranny put back in. Long story short, they did not put fluid back in the transfer case (or even check the fluid as far as i can tell).
About a week after driving the truck i realized that i hadn't tried out the 4wd capability and put it in 4wd. It went in but boy wasn't it a B***h to get it back out!
While in 4wd it wouldn't hardly drive but was bucking like crazy and dragging the front wheels. What i heard and felt was the tires rolling a few feet, then "barking" on the pavement while the truck jerked to a near stop and repeating until i could get it out of 4wd.
Now my little light on the dash stays on all the time but i'm not really worried about that. I know it's not in 4wd and i will trace that out and fix when i fix the rest. OH, almost forgot, i checked the TC fluid at this time and saw it had none. Filled it and tried 4wd again with same results.
I'm thinking that the chain stretched beyond it's use and is binding and releasing.
So I'm planning on replacing the chain.
Question: Is it safe to assume that other parts are worn enough to warrant a complete rebuild? or are there certain parts i should look for wear and tear and replace as needed.
i've never been in one of these but looking at a breakdown of it, it doesn't look that bad to work on and i'm confident enough to take it on.
Oh, truck has around 175,000 miles on it. Well kept, oil changed regularly, no problems with engine.
Thanks for any advice.
Steve

If the folks that put it back together didn't bother to check the fluid level in the T-case, I would be having a nice chat with them. This is THEIR screw-up, not yours.
As for your problem, it sounds for all the world like you have different gear ratios front and rear..... Or different size tires.

As far as the garage, they said all i asked and paid for them to do was put the tranny in. i still think they were negligent, but that don't solve my problem.

By-the-way HeyYou, i love that dragon picture of yours. I'm only about 7 hours from the "tail of the dragon" highway in NC. One of these days I'm going to get a trailer and pull my motorcycle up there to ride it. Told my wife if i ever do get to ride on that highway i was going to have to get a tatoo of a dragon like that. :-)
Sounds like a garage to avoid in the future...... Were it me doing the job for a customer, I would make damn sure that all fluid levels in the parts I touched were up to snuff...... But hey, that's just me.
Might want to just look for a replacement case from a junkyard..... they were pretty common.
I haven't been on a bike in a decade or so..... (still kicking myself for selling mine....) I LOVED some of the roads around here.... glacial terrain, so, some of the roads are quite twisty. LOTS of fun.

Ridge Road from Holloway road, east of Holloway, all the way to Mooreville in washtenaw county.
Another was Packard road, west of M-52 in Jasper. Straightens out after ya cross Sand Creek Hwy though.
US 12 is another fun one, if you are early enough in the morning to not have a boatload of traffic..... There are very few passing zones.... Most of it from Ann Arbor, heading west, is a BLAST. (again, if there isn't any traffic.)
