MPG questions
If I remember correctly, it's his transmission fluid temp gauge.
The slower you accelerate the better your gas mileage will be period.... most of you who get 8-9 mpg and DONT have a blown plenum or the wrong gear/tire combination are just driving too aggressivly... when you punch the gas more than just required, gas is POURED down your throttlebody and much of it goes in to the cat unburned this way because the engine just cant utilize it all (ironically people who drive this way create the most pollution and more likely to have a gutted cat "performance mod" as well) so there's nothing to stop it from going directly out the tailpipe.
And to the guy that asked about going to 35" tire to 33's?... I'm assuming your still using the 3.55 fatory gears and if so YES... stepping down to 33 will give you a noticable power increase and better gas mileage as well as help your transmission last longer because 35" tires and stock gears spell disaster for stock transmissions...
I get better gas mileage and more power currently than I ever have with generation 3 injectors/ adjusted fuel sync and 50mm throttlebody a new cat to replace the gutted one from PO being the only recent "performance mods" I've done over what was there..

I have the 4.10 gears in my truck. So you think if I'm averaging only 8-9 mpgs (according to the overhead instrument gauge) I have a blown plenum an screwed up cat? I'm going to have to replace the timing chain, cover etc. so might as well do it all while in there.

Fix the plenum, replace the cat and o2 sensors.
The answer doesnt change no matter how many times a day people ask this question or how to improve it....
I wish someone would just make a poll with truck specs and driver age and gas mileage.... so people could see what the averages are... most of the younger drivers get 8-11 mpg since more of them drive with lead foots ...light footed drivers can see up to 18mpg though its very rare and the moon and stars have to align just right for this to happen...

12-14 mpg is on the good end for a stock 318 and driving slow under 65..Go to the Garage link in the black bar at the top of the page, click it. At the very bottom of the first Garage page is "Fuel Economy Chart", and to the right is "See the MPG Summary". Hit that. You will find that leads to user-inputted fuel economy reports by vehicle. "Dodge Ram 1500" is at the top of the list, go there. (Most of that is just if you want to check a different Chrysler vehicle; I've put a link below for readers of this sub-forum).
When you poke around, be sure to check the column "# of tanks", and only look at those that have a few in there. There are lots of 1-tank reports but they are basically useless.

The gears are only one part of the equation... tire size works as the "second set of gears" working with the diff gears to put a particular load and gear ratio from drivetrain to ground surface.. 4.10 gears with 31 or 33" tires will have good mpg results... with 35" or 27" not so good as they both put the rpm range out of optimum range during normal driving speeds...
