OK, I have found and read the relevant pages to see how to remove / install the switch. It looks like I have to take the lower part of the dash apart, and maybe the steering column cover?

No big deal, I took the entire dash apart, except for the steering column, when I installed the regulator and gauges for the air system. Not a "fun" process, but at least I already know how.

The burning question, however, is if I can test that switch, once I have it in my hands. Does it work like a regular plunger switch, so that when depressed, it gives continuity? If so, I plan to start disassembling the dash today...

You folks are incredibly helpful. I would still be tinkering with the trailer jack, were it not for this discussion.

You can test the switch before you even remove it. Should be a test procedure in the manual. Brake lights also go thru the multi function switch (turn signal switch), so, that is another possible avenue of failure. Need to find out where the power goes away.

maybe this might help. you could try just swapping relays and fuses with other ones that are in the power distribution center. there looks like there should be a stop lights fuse in the power distribution center(C).

Much easier to read when you can enlarge an image on the computer. Thanks for that.

I did what you said, swapping fuses I knew worked, with the one that says fuse lp, and no change. Just for fun, I also swapped a few others and some relays around, and they all seemed to work.

Looks like I am tearing my dash apart this weekend, to test that switch.

Located a Chiltons for my truck, and while I generally find them "less than useful", this one had a pretty good drawing of the switch, and how it is mounted.

When it stops raining here, I'm gonna pull that sucker out. In the meantime, I am heading to the local parts store, on the chance that a new switch will solve the problem.

**fingers crossed**

Really? The FSM's are on the first page of the FAQ/DIY section. Not hard to miss. I myself provide links to info that's not as easy to find. But if we all just provide links, how will anyone learn where and how to look on DF for stuff? LOL

Anyway, I hope replacing the brake light switch does the trick for the OP.

Lmao, Zman. Actually I thought I had given a good idea where to look in my post before that...but I was being generous that day. Lol

Man, you guys are rough. And here I was feeling slightly good, for helping a fellow dodge driver out. Yes, they are on the first page of the DIY section, but if you noticed, the OP was an "actual OP" to the forum. Maybe he doesn't use computers/ forums much, considering he mentioned being an older fellow. Maybe he's not as computer savvy as y'all are. He had said he'd spent 20 minutes looking for it, so instead of being an *** and telling him to look harder, I provided the link, and was happy that not only him, thanking me, but another forum member thanked me for posting the link. Sheesh!! I can understand forcing people that have 100+ posts on the forum to look for their own stuff, cause they should know how by now, but dang, the guy was looking for a simple answer, and I know I've had my butt chewed on here for not searching hard enough. Let's keep new members around, not run them off. Maybe, someday, this guy will be teaching us all something new.

I've had these one eyed monsters for several years and been on here for a few too, but
I'm still not very skilled at operating these damn things.

Family stuff has come up - no emergencies, just the kind that can't be gotten out of.

I'll be back as soon as I am "allowed" the time to work on my own projects. I have the part in hand, so I should be able to get everything torn apart, and reassembled in the next couple of days.

BTW, thanks for the kind defense. I know that some folks get irritated when someone else can't see what seems obvious to them.

Hell, been there myself.

Having now been on the other side of the fence, I'll think twice and thrice, before I am quick to jump on them...
