Question loud grinding sound from front wheel

tonight on my way home my truck made a loud grinding sound from the front drivers side wheel.it only made the sound when the truck went real slow like 5 to 10 mph it was so loud people in the parking lot turned around and looked.it did it going forward and reverse.it was so loud i got a tow truck to tow me home.I looked at the brake pads and there at least 50 percent.it kinda sounded like if you step on a lose board and it makes that creeping sound but alot louder.anyone have any clue to what this could be?

Did you physically remove the pads from the caliper/rotor, or did you just look at them while they were still installed? Several years ago I had the same thing happen on my way home from Sun Valley, Idaho. All the twisty mountain roads and wide open straightaways, no problem. Then out of the blue the front end started this LOUD grinding/scraping noise. When I pulled the tire off, I couldn't see anything but maybe 50% pads by looking with it installed so I took off again, but the noise was just as bad. I pulled the tire and caliper off and on the bottom side, toward the inside, the pad had broken and the rivets were gouging into the rotor. The pad had worn crooked on that side and when it broke it was cocked in the caliper but I couldn't see it because of the dust plate. If it's not the pads, bearings usually don't just start making a loud noise, but if so simply jack up the front end and put one hand on top and one hand on the bottom of the tire and jerk the top then the bottom back and forth intermittently. You would most likely here popping or feel slop. It should be tight, with no looseness and no popping or clunking. I would look for debris in the caliper/rotor area, especially behind the dust plate.

Yeah, the hub/bearing assembly comes as one piece. The tricky technospeak term is "unit bearing"..... whoopee. They can be fun to separate from the knuckle...... lots of threads relating to that though.
