Default question...

have truck back from body shop, been great for awhile until i let the in laws take it for a trip. now the check engine light is on (solid) just happened while driving down the road. its a 96 5.9, wondering before i drive the 30 miles to get to a scanner if there is something i should check first. like fuse or anything stupid since they kept blowing my fuses by hooking a converter in. any help would be great.

Is there any noticeable mechanical issues? CEL could be anything. I know on my 01 I can do the key trick and get the codes but not sure if that works on a 96 or not.

Turn the ignition on/off/on/off/on, and codes will display on your odometer. But, I don't think it works on the 98......

On the older ones, it blinks two-digit codes on the CEL.
