Default tranny issue

ok so i have a 1996 ram 1500 with 5.2 and 46RH trans. 2wd. so the truck hasnt really slipped. but last night comming home after bogging with some friend my tranny shifted funny so today i did a band adjustment and one done it i test drove it. well i was going up a hill. and it made a whinninng sound and started smoking. but i didn't run it i losened the band out some and it quit. but now when i put it into manual 1st gear it won't move and it still won't shift right when passing. any ideas. i'm sure the tranny quit don't know weather it had a tranny put in before me or not. it has 250,000 miles too

sorry for the long paragraph.

Your 96 should have the RE....... No manual low indicates a band problem...... What procedure did you use to adjust them? (and I think the rear band, the one 'probably' giving you grief, the adjuster is IN the pan.....)

Actually I think the changeover from the 46RH to 46RE was a mid year change. Not for sure but during my hunt for a used trans I found several 96s that had the RH in it. I don't think I have seen anything about the RH version in the service manual either......

96 was the changeover year from OBDI to OBDII...... A 96 with an RH would be an aberration...

Can't edit on my phone so had to post again. To the OP, if you crawl under your truck and look at the plug situated behind the shift lever. If its a white 3 wire plug its an RH and if it has a black 8 wire plug its an RE.

There's a good test. And don't have to pull anything apart to look.
