overheating.........
First noticed lugging/pinging noises on flat road so checked the gauges.
Temperature gauge was near redline.... stopped immediately.
Added water twice before I made it home.... engine was spitting steam from block.... right side low down on the front corner.
12 y.o. pickup with 48000 klicks.
Any thoughts?
Thanks as always,
chenchen

It could be a variety of things...

water pump, timing chain cover (water flows through it), freeze plug ?

see water pump/timing cover water ports at the top of the block
and freeze plugs on bottom front of block.

From your helpful pictures I have pointed to the area that seems to be leaking.
It spurts coolant when the radiator cap is tight..... loosen the cap and it stops.
Question..... can I drive the vehicle to the repair shop.... about 10 miles and can I drive it with the cap loose (no pressure)??
chenchen.

provided that you carry some cans of water in the back of the truck to refill as needed...
and provided that you leave the cap loose or off to avoid building pressure (also so you can refill it w/o a big steam explosion).....
and provided you keep an eye on the temp gauge and refill radiator at the first sign of overheating...
and provided you keep the AC off....
then yes, you can drive it forever that way.
edit --- here's another option you could do if you are concerned about overheating. use care not to poke a bigger hole in the freeze plug than what's already there, but fill the freeze plug and surrounding area with RTV and let it cure for about 24 hours. it'll probably stop the leak for the next 10 years.
