I'm very mechanically inclined but I know jack about transmissions. I felt accomplished when I changed the drive and driven gears out in a TH200R4.

Would you mind walking me through what you mean? First, how would one get to the point where they could inspect the bands?..specifically 1st gear. Second, how would one tell if it needs adjustment? Third, how is the actual adjustment made?

When the solenoid and sender arrive I plan on pulling the pan and replacing those parts, s right off the bat you know that I will be at least as far in to do that with the pan and filter off.

Band adjustments aren't too bad..... one adjuster is on the exterior of the trans, the other, is in the trans.... since you are going to have the pan off anyway... sure couldn't hurt. Need a torque wrench that is accurate at 72 INCH pounds...... the exact procedure is detailed in the service manual. basically, all it is is, snug adjusters down to 72 inch pounds, then back them off a specific number of turns. (values are in the manual.)

Where exactly is this 8-pin connector? And does doing this have any bad effects on the trans? I know my solenoid/ switch is shot but this is an emergency. I need to pull a 5x8 1,000 miles due to a family crisis.

Drivers side of trans, 'bout halfway back. Goes straight down into the housing right above the valve body.

If the trans works fine shifting manually when disconnected, replace the governor pressure sensor and solenoid. Do NOT drive it 1000 miles like that.

I'm leaving at 9am tomorrow morning from upstate SC to northern Illinois. My trans is in limp mode, has been for quite some time. I'll be on the highway 98% of the trip. If my ram (390,000) miles makes it there then I'll be fine. But right now I have to load up and go. Family emergency.

I've done it before, it's not fun, and it can be dangerous. When I did it, to get to fourth, I had to pop it into Neutral and then back to drive and that gave me fourth.

You have a ton of miles. How many transmissions and engines have you been through?

What year is your truck?

'98 single cab short box. 318 auto. 388,900 miles on the clock. Engine is original, I'm on the 3rd used transmission. The thing still shifts fine, I know the solenoid/ switch is shot but I NEED this pig to pull a small box trailer toward Chicago tomorrow. Overdrive will be off, taking it slow. I just don't have 1st gear, typical limp mode. I don't wanna slip the trans on take-off with a load behind it (2,500 or so lbs). Even if the truck gets me halfway there, I'll be fine and happy she made it that far. You dodge guys should be happy to see one of these with almost a half million miles. If it makes it there in one piece, it'll get rebuilt. NO RUST!!! She has that going for her.
