Is this much oil crud normal under the intake barrel?
When I first got my truck I went to pennsoil and had them clean my motor . They ran a cleaner in it and changed the oil and ran oil In it till it came put clear from the oil pan
They prob wasted about 30 quarts of oil but it ran a lot better !

I have to say, thats one, if not the worst looking interior engine pics I've seen here on DF. Do not use any kind of flushing procedure. Clean up as much as you can(as previously stated), and also remove the oil pan and do the same to it. Clean or replace the pick up tube. Put it back together and use Rislone in place of a quart of oil. It will slowly clean the motor. Do another oil change after a couple 100 miles and keep using the Rislone in place of a quart of oil. This is a couple motors that have had regular maintenance and the use of Rislone. At least since I owned them. First one is the top end of my 98 with 180K when I installed the HS rockers. As you can see, no cleaning was needed. I swapped the HS rockers to my 2000(which was just as clean up top, no pic of the top end) But the 2nd pic is the bottom end of the 2000 when I had to replace the oil pan due to rust pin holes.

Hell I use engine restore in my two worn out v8's and the stuff seem to actually resolve my misfire issue on the ram after months of troubleshooting... and I dont burn oil at 140k.... I'm sold.

Those pics are worth a 1000 words. And it works slowly on a bad looking motor like the OP, or just simply keeps it clean if that's how the motor starts out. And there are no BARS product additives to stop leaks or swell seals or anything like that.

Actually many stop leak products including the famous "stop Leak" that I bought and used when I had a soft plug leak is made by bars.... they sell an oem version gm uses in small quantities in new cars to seal up cooling systems...
Smokey Y. the racecar driver used to mix it into the oil in 5 gallon pails for the racecars when he was a kid working his first garage gig...

That's how mine looked when I pulled the intake and valve covers. I used the cheapest oil and changed every 5000miles, now I switched to mobil syn and change 3000 on the dot.
To clean it I just plugged all the holes with rags and scraped/vacuumed it up. Then I ran some motor flush. I probably should pull the oil pan and change the oil pickup screen too.
Since you're in there might as well put a new double roller timing set on and water pump.
When you put the intake back on don't use rtv around the air intake ports like I did, it will squish out into the air inlets and restrict air flow.

I'm sorry, I meant there are no BARS poducts in the Rislone.
