Leaky injectors? If one or more of your injectors 'dribbles' after shutdown, that would give you your symptoms..... Got a fuel pressure gauge?

You could warm the engine up, pull the fuel rail and all injectors, (leave injectors on the rail) disconnect the electrical connector at the coil, cycle the key a couple times to re-pressurize the fuel rail, and see if any of your injectors are leaking.

Or bad fuel pump pressure regulator. A better than average fuel pressure tester will have instructions on how to test for leaking injectors also. It's as simple as pinching off the main supply line with the tester connected.

so i pulled the fuel rail today and the #6,#8 injectors drip about 3 to 4 times each. would that really be enough gas leaking to cause it to crank that long and smell flooded when it starts?

Without an inexpensive pressure tester, your just spitting into the wind.
