Question Weird Starting Issue

First time post, after searching to no avail I figured I would see what you guys think...

Just picked up a 98 with the 5.9L. Everything seems to be normal and running well after new plugs, air filter and a fuel system cleaner. Pretty typical start off.

The only thing that is stumping me is when I get in the truck in the morning or after a few hours of it sitting it takes two times to start. By two times I mean...no matter how long I let it crank the first time I turn the key it doesnt want to start. When I turn the key off...and back on to crank, it starts right up.

My first thought was a leaky/clogged injector, hence the fuel system cleaner and new plugs. But still nothing different...

Any other ideas?

Forgot to add...when the engine is warm, there are no issues with it starting. Just when the engine is cold.

Swap the Fuel pump relay, and the horn relay, see if that helps. If it doesn't change anything, do the same with the ASD relay. All relays are in the Power Distribution center under the hood, behind the battery.

Welcome to DF.

Tried last night, doesn't seem to work. But the horn doesn't work either...sounds stupid but that wouldn't have anything to do with it would it?

have you tried turning the key on twice to prime the fuel system before you start it? fuel line could be loosing pressure somehow when it sits overnight.

you know I thought about that the other day but don't think I've actually tried it yet. If that works...is there something I might be able to do to fix it?

i guess you could check your fuel lines to make sure they are not leaking but i think in order to fix something like that you might have to replace the whole fuel pump assembly.

Sounds like a bad pressure regulator to me. Get an inexpensive fuel pressure tester and see how long the system holds pressure after you shut motor off.

Simple test. Cycle the key on/off/on, then start it.

Yes but, with a gauge you can also check to make sure it's not leaking injectors.
