Default Exhaust Help

Hi I drive a 1999 dodge ram 1500 5.9L, and I currently have a si/do imitation flowmaster 40 series (Incinerator) with 20"X3.5" tips. While I like the deep rumble it's just not loud enough for me and I would like to have it louder. My question for you guys is what would you recommend to make it louder? I've thought about installing an e-cutout right behind the cat along with a set of pacesetter LTs and possibly 4" tips so when I have it closed I still get a nicer deeper sound than it currently is. Would this be a good option or would this cause any issues? Any help would be greatly appreciated

cutout right behind the cat will give the exhaust the opportunity to find its way into the cab..... not really a good idea.

Could go with a shorter muffler..... that would make it louder all the time though.

Welcome to DF.

Just cut the pipes off an call it a day.

Flowmaster 10 series are a single chamber muffler, more or less straight piped.

Straight piping has no tone just sound...... he wants to keep his nice deep rumble. I have 5'' tips 18'' long with flowmaster super 44's and i love the sound of it. Not real loud idling but you can tell the tips being so big change alot with echoing my exhaust carries out further.

Fix the plenum, get new o2's and a MagnaFlow cat (or gut the cat if you wish), and it will be louder. Don't open up the exhaust too much, you will lose bottom end.

+1 ...This is the way I went and it made the exhaust a lot louder than just having the muffler, but not too loud like that of a cutout. And definitely fix the plenum if you plan on buying a high flow cat.

What do you mean by fix the plenum? Sorry I'm still learning everything so you may have to explain. And also how would changing the o2 sensors affect it?

Check out the Plenum thread stickied at the top of this forum. it is a VERY common problem due to the design of the intake manifold on these trucks.

Basically, what zman is suggesting is get the truck running as it should, and solving the common problems before moving on to other mods.
