Rebuilding the alternator.....do you know what is wrong with it? Years agoa, when regulator was internal, the dieodes were the most common failure. Since that is not relative here, the only thing really lefft would be bearings and/or windings.

Have it tested to confirm it is bad before starting. Does it sound noisy while running?

No, I'm going to remove it today and have it tested at the part store. No whining noise that I've heard..planned on hand checking the pully after removal for a clean free spin..And, if it is bad I plan on opening it up to access the problem(s)..I would suspect the brushes/bearings and maybe the stator...but I'm NOT going to just guess..Just wish I could have it tested under actual vehicle load..thanks for the concern tho...

But, it isn't charging your battery at the moment is it? So, either the alt is bad, or the VR is bad.... test the alt, see what happens.

The NP (Nippondenso) alts are super ez to rebuild and in most cases its the brush set that needs replacing, cheap At $9 compared to $100+ for a rebuilt alt. The brush set is ez to replace no special tools needed. Windings don't go that often in an alt in most cases bearing or brushes.

Yeah the brush assembly is pretty easy as long as the stupid screws aren't a prob..getting the bearings out not so easy..and my main concern is just the basic hardware with it being so old...two stupid bolts made a easy plenum repair, lets just say SUCK!! I didn't get a chance to remove the alt today, but will in the AM..No, HY it's def not charging it! Keeping my fingers crossed it's not the VR!! Test the alt 2morro..keep you posted

The parts store tester (or at least some of them) do load test it. Not sure hoe much load they put on though. If there is a problem inside, it should be readily appearant.

You must be thinking about GM alternators. I don't recall any Mopars having internal voltage regulators.

So I ordered a brush assembly & terminal block..they got here today and I installed them, brought the alt to the parts store and had it tested and it came back ok..the next test was once it was back in the truck..Good!!! So happy it wasn't the EVR!
Sooner than later I plan to replace the rotor, rectifier & pulley and if the funds are there the stator too..as for now bearings are ok so we'll see how it goes..

New & Old Brush Assembly

Rotor shaft getting close
