Can you post pics of the broken parts?
Download the 01 service manual from the faq section here. (yeah, it's for ram trucks, but, you have the same 46RE trans the trucks do.) That will show ya where everything goes, and also have a nice detailed step-by-step for doing a trans R&R.

And I cannot envison the band breaking. They can wear, but I have never seen a band break in any transmission at all.
At the risk of saying they are trying to scare you into an overpriced rebuild,,,they are trying to scare you into an overpriced rebuild....

Here a edited picture of the broken band strut, is it possible to install a new one without dropping the valve body, and can i do this with the tranny on the vehicle?
