My 99 dodge ram van 2500 shifts into 1st ok, but after 5-10 miles a hour there is a long delay when shifting into 2, once in 2nd it's drives ok, but when you let off the gas, there is a slight reving like when it's downshifting, from what i read online, could this be the kickdown band out of adjustment? or is the tranny junk?, i really can't afford to rebuild it, or replace it, and i'm wondering how much does a kickdown adjustment or even a band replacement cost?. by the way, there is no fliud leakage, and fluid level is ok, and no clunking noise. thanks for any info.

Band adjustment is pretty easy. Need a torque wrench that will do inch pounds though. (72, to be exact....) If you don't wanna do it, any trans shop should be able to do a fluid and filter change, and adjust up the bands for under 100 bucks.

 

Sounds like a Governor Solenoid problem too if you ask me.

 

Well i went to the tranny repair place this morning, and they didn't have a lift available today, so i have to check in tomorrow, the guy there said they have to get it up on a lift and look at the "linkage" when i asked him about the band adjustment, he was adamant about inspecting the "linkage" externally, would the linkage affect the shifting from 1st into 2nd? i dont get it, thanks for any info.

 

If you think it's in "D" / drive , then it should shift.

 

Easy way to get an idea if linkage is adjusted properly - put in park, see if engine starts. Kill engine. Put in reverse, try again. Try in each gear. Should freely move through all ranges, and oly start in Park and neutral.

Then find another shop......one taht knows how to diagnose a transmission and has teh high tech thinggy (technical term) to plug in and see waht trans is doing while driving it.

 

well they got it up on a lift today, and pulled the pan, and found a small piece of the band "strut", guy said the band is broken, and it's not going into 2nd gear, going from 1st to 3rd, only when i get to the top of 1st and let off the gas. He said the tranny will have to be rebuilt for a cost of $2200, which i'm not going to dump into this vehicle, not worth it, my only question now is, how long could this tranny last?, by "babying" it and not travelling far. I'm considering also getting a used tranny, but don't know how hard it would be to change it myself. any thoughts? thanks...

 

In a van? Not that bad of a deal to swap it out.

2200 for a rebuild is outrageous. Shop around.

Band struts falling out aren't uncommon..... rarely does the band actually break though. You might be able to just stick the strut back in, readjust the band, and be good to go for a while again. Have you seen the 'broken' parts??

 

Yeah i actually have the "broken" part, it's the size of my thumb roughly, and looks like it snapped off something. i wouldn't even know how it's assembled, where would i find that infomation?, also can the band be replaced with transmission in the vehicle?
