use old motors in newer rams?
the magnum motors have la motor mounts but the la motors do not have the magnum motor mounts so you will have to make some sort of new motor mounts. i think you should just keep the 46RH. i don't even thing it is possible to stick a OD assembly on a 727 or more people would probably just do that. if you are going old school i would ditch the computer all together and just wire it up like an old school truck.
I think trying to put the overdrive and t-case on a 727 would be fun, at the very least. According to popular theory, the 46R? trans started out life as a 727.... but, I sure remember the old 727's being MUCH more durable.... If you are working on the 97 truck, you have a 46RE, which needs a pcm to run it. 46RH, found in the 94-95 (and possibly earlier...) trucks only needs pcm for TCC lockup, and O/D.
you can spend $100 on a kit to control those. the computer won't work anyways once the sensors on the engine stop responding to the computer.
i think the 727 and 46Rh do share some similarity but i think it is the small difference that are the biggest problem. there is a reason the 46RH got a deeper pan.

So a old 727 for a small block Mopar, Np205 pass side drop, under/over drive case, Old school front king pin Dana 60 pass side pumpkin with part time hubs, coil overs. or a 727 with a divorced Np205 or a doubler t case set up. Done
What triggers the TCC on these 46RH trannys rpm based or fluid pressure?
On my older 90's propane Chevy the pcm still controlled the charging system (or did it not sure about that) and all the gauges, ign was just a HEI dizzy dropped in, even used the ign + coil wire.

wow this is starting to become a real challenge, the motor mounts definetly dont work, only 1 bolt,i can live with old school ignition and belts but i need the computer to still power the truck,it still has to be road legal not a bush truck! mother mopar used to be so interghangable from muscle cars n trucks, this isnt going to be easy!
You can make the Magnum motor run off propane and use the stock pcm, not much harder to do, but you will need a add on timing box to the org pcm

i blew up the 318,i already have the truck converted for dual fuel, but want it strickly propane,i already removed the tank in lines for fuel, sure would hate if i cant get my 360 to work,i do have a 01 318 but that takes the fun out of this project, sucks sting here with this motor and diffs and not being able to use them.
you can spend $40 on a voltage regulator and all the wiring and plugs you need to run the alternator without the computer. all the stock gauges should just be old enough that they should not need the computer to operate them.
here is the kit you could use to control the TCC and OD
