'96 ram stalling trouble
this morning im heading down the highway and my dodge stalls out.shift into neutral and restart it.this continues for some time along with loss of power issues.when i get to my destination it finally dies completely, wont stay running.seem to have a lot of black soot on the end of tail pipe.just wondering if any of you guys have a clue what would cause this before i start throwing parts at it.i have been consuming a bit of oil in the last month or so and its been 4 years since i changed the plenum gasket(did not use the hughes kit).
would a plugged cat cause this? i broke down 220 km's from home, thank god i have a CAA membership.
thanks

Send some of that rain this way.... 104 today.... (an no, that's NOT the heat index, that's the actual temp....) Not exactly typical for Michigan....
Wasn't just something getting wet was it? Is the seal at the back of the hood still in place?

Right in the middle, at the bottom. I can throw rocks at ohio, and almost expect to hit it.
Yeah, the weather truly sucks. Supposed to cool of next week.... down into the high 80's, low 90's...... whoopee.

i pulled a couple of spark plugs and they had a nice brown colour.sprayed the distributer cap, wires and coil with water and the engine did run a little rougher but ran properly when i test drove it.i dont have a fuel preasure tester but when the scrader valve was depessed fuel did spray out.im sure it was not near 45 psi by any means.wish i had a proper tester to eliminate that potential problem.not sure how to check for a plugged cat,put my hand over the tail pipe and the preasure did seem low.but im not sure what kind of preasure should be there.
wonder where i should go from here??????
thanks

ok heyyou, will try the o2 sensor trick.i did compression test on 1 cylinder and am about 130 psi.will check all the others later.borrowed my buds OBD2 reader and found 1 code,"evaporitve system leak very small".i did have the battery disconected for awhile so the codes may have cleared.gonna take it for another spin untill it acts up the throw the reader back on it.
also forgot to mention that i pulled the plug on #8 cylinder and it was nice and clean
thanks again
