Default Which power steering box for my 1999 2500 v10 4wd

Cants seem to find one on eBay that is for the 4x4 2500s only the 2wd or the 3500 4wd.

Makes a wierd vibration and noise when I turn sometimes as well as about two to three inches of play. Also steers super easy to left , stiffer to right. Checked the tie rod ends etc while someone steered and they don't show a lot of movement at all. Replaced the lower ball joints recently as well. Should I try an adjustment to the gear box or is this box a goner?

Could a steering damper be the culprit?

171k on this box and most of the steering components.

Thanks

John

The unspecific and generic "don't show a lot of movement.." could be an indicator.....What kind of movement is it showing?

And unless you are looking at a Borgeson or RedHead gear box, I would not recommend it.

Default Videos of issue

Video of play from linkage from pitman arm. Is this normal?

Video showing how much play I have in wheel. Bad box or should I adjust box?

Weird grone when making turns. Not all the time but I feel it as well as hear it.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I was just underneath my 2500 yesterday to fix the crooked steering wheel issue and noticed the same amount of play in the linkage. I don't know if that is normal but my power steering is fine, so if it is an issue it is unrelated to your steering box issue.

Also there is a thread in the DIY section on how to remove the play from the steering wheel. It involves a 16 mm end wrench and a 5 mm hex wrench. I gave it a whirl yesterday but my truck is so caked with grease and gunk I aborted the mission after 15 frustrating minutes.

The play in the vieeo of the pitman arm and the idler arm joint is excessive. I would recommend replacing these joints as well as check/replace tie rod ends. Check ball joints. That should tighten up your steering considerably. There shuld be no "free play" in the joints like you have there.

After changing these, then you might adjust steering box. But tightening steering box will not compensate fot the worn joints and will only cause box to wear even sooner.

The gear box is also done. Get one that has been suggested. Along with replacing the other worn parts, it will steer real nice.
