Default Who's changed a rear pinion bearing in a Dana 60?

My '98 is making some noise. We took off the driveshaft and there is quite a bit of play. We also think it needs wheel bearings. So we want to do it all at once.

Anyone else done one? Pics? Somebody want to come do it for me for a free hug?

Where ya at?

Gonna need some specific tools for that exercise... need to correctly set pinion depth, etc. Not an exercise to be undertaken lightly.

South Bend, IN. If we mark everything, like the shims and such, can we just reassemble it with out setting everything back up again?

You can..... whether it will be right or not, is another question.

Gonna need a press, and bearing puller to get the inner bearing off of the pinion as well. Do you have those available to you? Might be able to rent the gauges and such.

If you haven't grabbed a service manual for your truck from the faq section yet, get one.... Read the section concerning your axle, and gear setup. It will give you a good idea of what you are lookin' at.

Now, I HAVE seen folks NOT use the gauges at all, and just go by the pattern on the ring gear..... and never have one come back.... but, he had been doing diffs for about a century too.......

One of these might help in deciding whether you want to tackle the job yourself.

Got the bearing puller and press. Hell if I could find another Dana 60 w/4.10's for about the same price I'd just swap axles. I've looked into 14-bolts too but I've heard you have to hook a tone ring or something up? I have no idea. I know you can get 14-bolts cheap.

Some Dana diff's you need a spreader to get the carrier out and back in, without this tool things can be tuff. What year is your truck?

you dont need a spreader for a 98 it just drops out once you unscrew the carrier and undo the bearing caps then just pull the yoke and the pinion will drop right out
