Question 99 Ram ext cab 4x4 with 40 mpg?!?!?!

So, i just got my second 99 dodge ram 1500 today, and having lost my first i got really excited to show it off. Upon showing it to one of my friends, he began telling me about how his cousin has one just like mine (gas powered, big tires, ext. cab, 4x4) that boasts 40 MPG!!!!!!! thanks to expensive modifications like a programmer, performance chips and some beefy cool air intake. swears power hasn't been sacrificed. I immediatly called him on his bull, (although he swears to it) But it got me thinkin, if money weren't an issue, what would be an extremely effective way to save gas without sacrificing power?

And yes, i know i bought a big gas guzzlin truck and i got what i expected, so im happy even if a solution doesn't exist, but are there any performance mods out there that i could actually see results with?

MPG, as in meters per gallon? That sounds right.
If you're talking miles per gallon, the motor he had was not v8 magnum, that's for sure.

Swap in a 4bt cummins and you might get around 25mpg highway.

There's not much to increasing mpg, just fix anything that's wrong with it (blown plenum, cat, o2's, etc.) and take it easy on the gas pedal, and you'll get the most mpg you can; 13 city, 16 highway at the most?

There's things you can get that potentially give you another mpg or two, like a tuner, but it'll also give you more power and make you wanna 'go fast' which leads to worse mpg...

40 mpg is total bs unless he was rolling down mountains with the engine off.

Lol dido no way to see that type of mileage without a 4bt with 12 gears and 20k worth of windtunnel test and airfoil design.

I've got half that a few tanks and it was from driving very carefully and slowly. I am now averaging a little over 19mpg, but as I've said a bunch of times, I drive 45-50 on open highways and accelerate very slowly-literally 20-30 seconds to 45-50mph, something that is totally impractical for most folks. I have 1 stoplight to deal with driving between my home site and current home. When I have to drive around town a lot, it drops to around 16.5-17.
