Is it a 318 or 360? If its a 360 then your harmonic balancer may be shot. If thats the case then stop driving it. I pulled a 360 out because of a knock and turns out the crank was snapoed in two. After closer examination i determined that the harmonic balancer was shot and i believe it was the culprit behind the broken crankshaft, crazy think is that it was still runnin and driving.

With my 360 the weight piece...not where belt goes, the other piece actually separated from my harmonic balancer and once the separate it runs horrible and it gets very noisy....i got my new balancer for $89....kind of pricey but if yours is bad change it asap

Mines a 318 so do those same rules apply? Haven't looked yet in my Service Manual for Harmonic Balancer so I'll research it. Thanks guys.

The 318 is interally balanced, whereas the 360 is externally. In your case, you have just a crank pulley.

Are you sure? My LA 318's have harmonic dampeners on them, same as a 360, but they are evenly weighted all around. Maybe they didn't put them on at all with the magnums, but I think they serve a vibration dampening purpose in addition to balancing.

Every internal combustion engine will have a harmonic balancer on it, how it is weighted varies from one engine to the next.... internally balanced have a neutral balance.... erm... balancer, externally balanced engines do not. You can not mix and match, as it will destroy your motor.

I think, over the years, Chrysler changed the design on the balancer/pulley, from a bolt on pulley, to one integrated with the balancer in 2000?? I think?

In all reality, the "correct" term for that thingy hanging off the front of the crank is: "Harmonic Dampener"...... as that is it's REAL job.

that there harmonic dampener also has a rubber bushing in it that likes to give up the ghost when it gets old.. it isn't a big deal to replace it..
