Default Help with 96 ram shifting issue

I'm having issues with my 96 ram 1500 2wd since i bought it almost a year ago it had a slight hard shift from first to second but today we get a few miles and notice it stopped shifting. Then it stopped going in drive reverse and all other gears. We shut it off turned it back on and it worked fine for a few blocks first wouldn't shift then stopped going in drive and it did this every time we turned it off and back on. Any idea what this could be? I looked online and found a lot of indication it might be the governor solenoid? I didn't smell burning tranmission or anything and I had the fluid checked it was a little overfull and had bubbles on the dip stick. Also there was no check engine light on or anything and I don't have anything to check the codes.

Thank you in advanced

Bubbles on the stick aren't a good sign.....

Make sure to check fluid in neutral. Park will give an inaccurate reading.

Doing fluid/filter change, and having a look at the governor sensor/solenoids sure wouldn't hurt.

Also @ operating temp, flat surface and in your case after you park it turn it off then on and shift it through all gears then leave it in neutral as stated by HeyYou..you might want to try starting it in neutral make sure it does..post up the results...

Usually, if you go in that deep, might just as well replace it..... can get good Borg Warner heavy duty units for under a 100 bucks from various places. (rock auto, ebay... etc.)

Hubby found shavings in the pan and filter bummer. Since then I have been calling different places and for some reason no one has their facts right does anyone know what is compatible for our truck? I was told by one guy that only the 96 and 97 ram will fit is that true? And if not is a 2wd dakota with the same engine compatible for the transmission.

Thank you .

Info

96 Dodge ram 1500
2wd with an automatic and overdrive
5.2L

When you say shavings, are we talking big? Because there's a magnet at the bottom that's there to grab those pieces which is normal if they're small in size and amount..And is the tranny like totally shot that you're replacing it? Just wondering what's going on, more info will be helpful in assisting you...

Any 46RE from 96 to 2002 will work, the 2000 and up will need the governor pressure sensor and solenoid changed, to match wiring on your truck. They also mount a bit differently, but, thats just one piece, and everything will bolt right in. I do believe the 96-99 46RE, regardless of what it comes out of, will bolt right in, and just work. (aside from the differences between two, and four wheel drive. You MUST get a 2 wheel drive trans.)
