V10 Head Gasket vs Timing Question
Hello every one! I am having a question about a v10 thats got at least a blown head gasket. See I used to own the truck (2000 3500 V10) and ended up selling it to a family member as he needed it more than I did and now I am buying the truck back. He resently got it hot and ended up blowing a head gasket. It does have milk in the oil pan and showing the classic signs. There are some things going on though that I don't think fits a head gasket symptom. The truck will barely start now and when it does it spits and back fires so hard that it blows the oil breather cap off (cant stand on the driver side of the engine bay or you will have a pop knot on your head from the thing flying). Now I can see compression building in the water system and water being in cylinders and the crank case, but how in the heck woul there be that much compression under the valve covers? Is it possible for the engine to push that much compression through the oil ports to blow the oil breather off that hard or could there be something else going on there?
Don't run the engine any more. Tear the top end down, and see what you find. I would almost suspect a holed piston in one cylinder,(next to where the gasket is blown....) or worse..... if coolant is making it into the oil, you have some issues......

Thanks for the input guys. I plan on tearing the top end down and replacing the head gaskets. Im hoping that it may have just blown out around an oil port and not a cracked or busted piston. Im definatly not running the engine anymore until I get the problems resolved. I will post back in a week or so when I find out whats going on.
Sounds like the head gasket breached between the cylinder and an oil gally causing you to dump compression into the oil pan

Well I said that I would post back when I started the tear down process on the v10. So far I have drained the oil which was full of water and taken all the spark plugs out and sprayed them with blaster to help keep the cylinders clean. I was also able to remove the upper intake before dark today. I found fresh oil in the intakes and throttle body. Hopefully its still a badly blown head gasket and not shot rings or pistons. Tomorrow I will pull off the lower intake and the heads and get a good look at what I am really working with.
I'm hoping that's not the case but I know it's not looking good. I ran a test on the thermostat and found that it was most likely the cause of the overheating in the first place. I will know the full extent of the damage in a day or so.
