Default Truck finally runs.....but.....

Well after months (no one had time to help me out) of farting around with this truck a friend FINALLY got it running. However, now it needs an alternator. This truck has been costing an arm and leg. Still have yet to address the locked seat belts. Sorry all just needed to rank for a moment, LOL.

Locked seat belts is just a wire under the center console. (if you have the 40/20/40 seats)

Is it the alt, or the regulator? Get the alt tested.

How? in the truck? Just testing voltage output?

In order for the alt to work, the regulator has to work as well. If either fails, you get the same symptoms. (low voltage... and eventually a dead battery) Need to test each individually. Most any parts store can test the alt.... if the alt passes or fails, you know which part is bad.

It drains the battery. I'm honestly not sure how he tested. I'm impressed he even got it running.

I hate to say it but this truck has been a big headache to be honest. I've had this truck a year and have yet to get put on the road because we've had one problem after another with it seems.

Is there a way to find out if the alternator is 117 amp or 136 amp? It's a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 Laramie SLT / ST and the engine is 5.9L V8 SFI the vin number is 1B7HF13Z7XJ509508.

I guess the better question is does the 117 amp mount any different than a 136 amp?

Take alt to parts store and have it tested. I don;t think there is any physical differene in the mounting of either. You can get a build sheet from Dodge. Loof for the thread with the ling in the FAQ/DIY section. They respond pretty fast, and it will tell you what came on the truck from factory.
