The axle shaft ujoints will do this click sound that you can't tell what side. Only way to check is with a 2nd perosn, be on flat ground, put in neutral, and rotate quarter turn at a time, with a hand check on the ujoint for looseness. No brake, b/c you are trying to get an unloaded condition on the ujoint. It's a real bugger to find what needle bearings said bye bye.

If you still are confident on the ujoint check, then I'd consider unit bearing check.

Edit: make sure lug nuts are tight....

Sorry, was rambling with my phone when typing...i hate touch screens. So spent the past week working on it. I dropped the drive shaft out of the back. All the ujoints moved smoothly as they are supposed to with no looseness or slop. I also took the front drive shaft out of the truck and drove it. Still did it. Whats throwing me off is the fact it STOPS doing it when i engage 4 wheel drive. Checked the back brakes, everyhting looked good in there, plus it does it when im not applying the brakes so that was a long shot. When i jack the truck up and turn the rear wheels by hand i swear i hear it comming from the middle of the truck. I havent had a freind over yet to listen while its running on stands. What do you mean by unit bearing?

LOL funny story about the lug nuts...the idiot that did my inspection last gunned the damn lugs on so hard one actually split in half....horizontally.....had to have it air chiseled out.....so no they wernt loose

with rear of truck on jack stands and trans in neutral, one person rotate rear wheels while other puts ear near diff, drive shaft, t-case, etc. you can use a piece of pipe as a stethoscope to pinpoint noise. be careful of rotating parts.

unit bearing is front wheel hub(unitized bearing)

Check the u joints with the shaft in the truck. Youll never be able to tell how much slop you have with it off the truck. Just push your hand on the shaft by the u joint. If it moves, its bad.

Did you figure out the clicking noise on your rig? I have an ‘07 that just started making the same clicking noise you described in your earlier thread. Sounds like the same problem; the clicking stops when I shift into 4WD, and all the u-joints and other components are tight. Any help would be great, thanks.

His is a second gen, yours is a third gen. This thread is 10 years old, and he hasn't been here since then. Your best bet is to post up in the third gen section, describe your problem, what you have done to try and diagnose/fix it.
