Default transfer case sounds like its clicking...i think

Hey all, had a username on here a while ago but can't remember what it is, so i created a new one.

Anywho, I have an 01 1500 off road edition. When driving at low speed, i hear a click sound comming from under the truck. I thought it might be brake related, but when i put the truck in 4 wheel drive, the click stops, so its leading me to beleive its something with the transfer case. Could this possibly be the "snap ring of t case death"? Im going to pull the tail shaft housing off this weekend and see what it looks like in there. Anyone have this click noise problem before. I'm hoping to god I don't have to replace the tcase right now.

my clicking noises are usually u-joints, either front axle or rear drive shaft. or maybe front wheel bearing.

put it up on 4 jack stands and run it. be careful.

yeah i don't think its u joints, definitly louder than that. When i put it up on jack stands in the garage and spin the tires manually i hear it. I orginally thought it was something in the rear brakes, but the sound is definitly commin from the middle of the truck. Im juat hoping the transfer case doesnt lock up on me.

I found it strange that it actually went away when i put it in 4 wheel drive also.

Ok so i had it apart this weekend. dropped the drive shaft..checked u joints. no slop..everything seemed to move freely. pulled tue extension housing off...snap ring was rigut where its supposed to be. Checked fluid..full...but black. Changed and put in atf +4. bolted everything back together. Pulled wheels..bake brakes look good...nothing seemed out of place. So i have no idea what in blazes this noise it. it almost sounds like the clicking noise a center cap would make on a car when loose and spinning. I hear it more on the passenger than the driver side....and louder. Im frsh out of ideas. It seems to go away or not be as bad once i hit 60 mph or so. Any ideas?

Rock in the center cap?

If it will do it at a low enough speed, have someone else drive the truck slowly, while you walk beside, and see if you can isolate where the noise is coming from. Or, put the rear up on jackstands, see if you can hear it with the engine at idle, in gear. (watch for moving parts......)

Sorry, I still kind of think it's an axleshaft ujoint. I'm not understanding what you are referring to in the quote above I picked out...as it just reads conflicting.

The axle shaft ujoints will do this click sound that you can't tell what side. Only way to check is with a 2nd perosn, be on flat ground, put in neutral, and rotate quarter turn at a time, with a hand check on the ujoint for looseness. No brake, b/c you are trying to get an unloaded condition on the ujoint. It's a real bugger to find what needle bearings said bye bye.

If you still are confident on the ujoint check, then I'd consider unit bearing check.

Edit: make sure lug nuts are tight....
