Default Harmonic Balancer Question

A little confused, hoping for some insight. When I did my plenum and timnig chain etc, the timing gasket kit came with a harmonic balancer repair sleeve. I searched and found at the time that someone said I had to use the sleeve because the front seal that comes with the kit with the sleeve in it was slightly larger. So anyway I used the sleeve just to be safe.No problems or anything but the rubber is seperating from the balncer now.I just ordered a new one but had a question. Do I have to go out and buy another repair sleeve to put on my new balancer so it doesnt leak at the front seal? Can anyone verify that the front seal is indeed slightly larger in that kit with the sleeve? I just dont want to put a new balancer on and have the front seal leak. Thanks for any help.

ok,just didnt make sense to put a repair sleeve on a brand new balancer... and that would be way easier than putting a new seal in.

also you say speedi sleeve. Those seem to be over $20 bucks, the one at oreillys(auto store) is just called a balncer repair sleeve and its $3. Why the price difference?

I would change the seal, no need to remove the timing cover. It can be done with it in place. The steps how to do this can be found in the factory service manual. If you don't have the fsm it can be downloaded here on DF.

why would you change the seal? If the sleeve is $3,the seal i believe is like $20 plus its a hassle to remove at least my old one was..

I guess it would be a personal thing for me. Why put a sleeve on a nice new HB when it's no longer needed. To each there own.

I have done so many seals I just use a big screwdriver to pop them out, but there is a tool just for this job. Have a look at the link and that might give you some ideas on what to use get it out. Maybe one of your friends has one if you don't.

Slide hammer with a PK screw attachment works for pulling seals.
