Are rockers tightened down? Even if not, a little resistance is not an issue. It should not "free wheel" but rotation should be smooth and not jumpy.

Your son saw the pin in the distributor, or down the hole?

no pin but he found whats left of a plastic ring (he is still fishing)

Dude, just do a complete tear down and rebuild. You'll be ahead lol. And while you're in there build it with some fun parts

ok i found the pin it was sitting in the pan i dumped the oil it was attached to the drain plug and got out all the plastic we could find
