It likely did. Then when it shifted the lever snapped into R.

I'm thinking we're thinking of different episodes. The test was merely to see if you could get into reverse at a high rate of speed going forward.

I think they used a Ford Crown Vic as the auto test and a Mazda or something as the manual test.

Yes we are speaking of different episodes.
I haven't watched Mythbusters in a couple years at least.

No support bearing.

The thing that bothers me is the thunk I feel at about 25 mph when letting of the gas...
look at trans mount sounds as iff you riper the rubber off the steel block
also check engine mounts may have broken one of them thats what your issue sounds like

No, it's a cheap easy fix, that's actually a desirable diagnosis!

Well, it decided it wanted to drop into reverse...at 45mph.
Well, when it did that, it killed the engine and I had to coast with no brakes and no steering into a drive way. I put it in park, and started it. It took a few seconds to restart, then it was fine.
Now, the transmission seems to still shift fine, now really strange noises, no slippage in forward or reverse, nothing seems broken right now.
Quite obviously, I am worried about the t-case and the OD unit. I noticed that after all this the OD unit, at low speed (less then 40 mph), seems to kind of "thunk" when coasting. Now, this could just be me being paranoid and listening to any little thing. I did just recently tighten the TV cable and that may be contributing to it, I guess...

I also noticed that apparently when this happened my steering gear PISSED fluid. Like, dumped half the PS resivor bad. When I had started driving again, I noticed my steering really "airly." So I get where I was headed and check the PS fluid, half gone. Look under the truck and see half of the box covered and a little drip.
So far it doesn't seem like any more has leaked out, but I have some errands to run today, and I'll check then too.

Anybody that has any insight on all this crap, would be appreciated.

Your screwed save for a rebuild

I have a hypothesis - Trans linkage is slightly misadjusted, and putting in Neural, rooster compb was sitting on detent ball in tranny, and nudged into reverse. Check that adjustment while you are there.

Also +1 on checking mounts and u joints.
