Unhappy Did something stupid: hurt driveline?

So I did something really stupid last night: I put my truck in neutral...at 45mph.
Well, it decided it wanted to drop into reverse...at 45mph.
Well, when it did that, it killed the engine and I had to coast with no brakes and no steering into a drive way. I put it in park, and started it. It took a few seconds to restart, then it was fine.
Now, the transmission seems to still shift fine, now really strange noises, no slippage in forward or reverse, nothing seems broken right now.
Quite obviously, I am worried about the t-case and the OD unit. I noticed that after all this the OD unit, at low speed (less then 40 mph), seems to kind of "thunk" when coasting. Now, this could just be me being paranoid and listening to any little thing. I did just recently tighten the TV cable and that may be contributing to it, I guess...

I also noticed that apparently when this happened my steering gear PISSED fluid. Like, dumped half the PS resivor bad. When I had started driving again, I noticed my steering really "airly." So I get where I was headed and check the PS fluid, half gone. Look under the truck and see half of the box covered and a little drip.
So far it doesn't seem like any more has leaked out, but I have some errands to run today, and I'll check then too.

Anybody that has any insight on all this crap, would be appreciated.

The real question is why would you want to drop it into reverse at 45mph?

Could always drop the pan and see what/if anything is floating around. Change the filter out while you're there.

I wanted to drop into neutral, and it decided it wanted reverse.

I figured someone would say drop the pan.
I gotta get a drain pan...

I'd just take the serp belt off first and try to spin the PS pulley. You might have sheared the shaft off based on your symptoms.

If that happened, then yeah pulley just spins and pushes no fluid. The leak occurred from blowing one of the orings on the line or out the cap or whatever....basically over pressurized.

Good luck on the tranny and downstream though....

I still have steering, I added more fluid and it works fine. It's just that the right right of the steering box was soaked. I almost wonder if it spewed out of the PS cooler for some reason.

I'd highly suggest you find the source of the leak at some point then.

carry on

I'd first do a visual of the driveline. Kind of sounds like it could be several things such as: ujoints, pinion, tcase, etc.

have 2 ppl. You down on the ground, and someone just putting into gear to see what kind of underside action can be witnessed/heard.

Jack stand it all to get some speed on it (slightly) to compare from on ground.

Things of this nature....before dropping the pan unless you know for sure it's time to drop it.

Alright, when it's not raining I will take a look at the u-joints. Driving it it felt kind of like a u-joint, but I'll look and see.
