You could return your hughes kit, buy the ebay kit, buy a timing chain and have your cake and eat it too.

I messed up the tube and gasket that come off the water pump taking it apart. gotta go get a new one from the parts store. as for the timing chain... if my truck has 221,000 miles its safe to say it has been done???? thanks for all the advice guys. reading about everyone's experiences really made it a lot easier to do the job

Nope.

Only way to know for sure it to inspect the chain. Unless of course the PO said he changed the timing chain....

my 01 has a timing chain inspection hole (w/plug) on the passenger side of the timing cover - on the front, about halfway up. its a bolt that looks out of place. remove it and you can stick a screwdriver in the timing cover and check the chain.

I just looked on my '94 5.9 and my '98 5.2, and I dont seem to have that on either one of mine. I dont suppose you have a pic that you could post? Maybe it was added on later models?

Alright so this thread is 2yrs old but people still read these obviously. I have that little plug on my cover and I had no idea what that was but it makes sense. I'll make sure to take a picture of it @Scooter78 when I'm finished doing mine. Might make another little thread, more threads about the plenum and timing chain can never be bad, they're complicated. I've torn into mine... 5 times now, this is my last, I've had some, lets say complications with the tensioner and chain I put in.
