TC is locking up, OD is not engaging.

It's a higher gear, like a 4th gear, controlled by that button on your dash.

It's one more gear. It has a higher ratio to lower rpms at highway speeds to conserve fuel, etc.

What could cause this? I've been topping out at 50mph because I'd rather not go above 2000rpm while traveling on the highway.
If everything is stock you should be hitting 3rd around 25 to 30mph and 1st to 2nd, 15 to 20 mph. Driving like grandpa, anyway. Have you inspected TV cable is secure and nothing broke or binding up? And adjusted right?

I know when I had transmission issues in my 96 it did indeed give me multiple codes but no check engine light.... when I asked about it I was told the "check engine" light is just that. Check engine not transmission or drivetrain. It makes sense if you think about it. since if it was for all codes it would say "check computer" or "drivetrain"....
connect a code reader to it and I bet you'll see codes...
others hear will argue you should see the light but I didnt... now the "OD off" button should be coming on automatically when the OD malfunctions or the transmission overheats.

also if you bought it this way,
make sure the right transmission is installed...it sounds funny I know but previous owners have been known to take some crazy shortcuts to sell their truck.

Far be it from me to lend a hand - but you don't by chance have anything else occurring like the rpms constantly surging do you? I had that and from searching here decided to put in a new throttle position sensor. It began to act properly after a few blocks.
