RedRam,
I recently got my 01 transmission rebuilt due to a TC failure. When I was at the tranny shop the owner advised me that in this year pickup the TCC locked up in 3rd gear and in OD. This explains why you shift into 3rd, have lock up, then shift into OD. There is a TSB to fix this since the older pickups as well as the newer pickups only lock up in OD. I don't know what years this affects but it would defiantly explain your symptoms on your 01. I could look up the TSB for you and give you the number but it basicly reprograms your computer so you only get a TCC lock up in OD.

1st,2nd,3rd, TC lockup, OD. That's how they work. And yes, I do believe you can have the PCM flashed at the dealer so the TC does not lock up in 3rd.

Sorry merc, I do not know (I'd have to say , 96 up is obd2, so not sure). But more than likely the flash will be bundled with the death flash.

There is a flash sticker on the PCM dated july 12, 2012. I don't know what was done because it was still the original owner's. I bought the truck on a whim from a dealer in Independence, MO. last January after he traded it.
Flew down there, took it for a test ride and drove back to Fargo. Haven't found the dealership that put the new sticker on to see what they did. Would local dealer be able to tell what or why if I wanted to know for sure.

Wouldn't you want it to lock up in 3rd if you had OD button off? Or would it only lock in whatever highest gear being used?

Incorrect. You are getting TC lockup at 30, and OD at 42.

TC locks up after 3rd gear, and 3rd gear only. It will not lock up after 1st or 2nd.

It is already locked before hitting OD...if everything is working correctly.

If youhave OD off, it will still lock up after hitting 3rd.

After the shift at 30 I can tell there is still slippage by watching the tach. After 42 there is no slippage so evidently that is when lockup occurs.

Still wrong. Don't want to argue, but the trans is designed to lock up after 3rd, and before OD. There is no slippage because inout shaft is locked up and possibly direct clutch band is worn.

Read the FSM and it will verify this.

PTCC and TCC will acure with a steady speed at the TPS. They don't go into lock up after every shift. You need to maintain speed to get the transmission to go into lock up. And these transmission can go into TCC lock up in 1st thru 4th gears. Also the 1st gen ram trucks that have a lock up torque converter will also go into lock up. If you let off the gas pedal or touch the brake pedal the transmission will disingauge lock up. A brake light switch will also cause the transmission not to go into lock up at all.
