Default stretch head bolts vs. regular bolts?

Has anyone actually replaced one or two head bolts with a bolt from the hardware shop? What is the danger of that?

Other than not being the correct bolts? And what are "stretch head bolts?"

If he is, using regular hardware store bolts is NOT a good idea! (Are the head bolts on these engines TTY? I have not loked at them.)

After looking around, "stretch bolts" and TTY bolts are the same thing. I know the only TTY bolts on the Jeep 360 are the intake manifold bolts, which do need to be replaced with the appropriate TTY bolts, NOT hardware store bolts. The head bolts are not TTY, however most people do replace them. ARP makes a good set.

There is a fair bit of debate on whether the intake bolts are TTY or not.... even the service manual doesn't mention having to replace them.

No real debate. Intake bolts are threaded all the way up, a technically impossible characteristic of TTY bolts (per ASME).

I see that this subject has been discussed ad nauseum on various forums. I replaced them with the Felpro bolts when I did my plenum plate. It seems like lots of people reuse them after sending a tap down the hole and running a die over the bolt. Other people replace them with grade 8 stuff from Lowes.

But you're right about them being threaded all the way up. I don't know where the TTY stuff came from. Neither Felpro, ARP, nor Mopar mention anything about it. My FSM doesn't mention anything about it.

In any case, the head bolts aren't TTY.

Wood screws and Liquid Nails seem to work for me.

You're starting to sound like a Jeep owner. I thought you guys were better than that.
