Default mileage

Hello everyone,
I'm not a Ram owner but hope to be this coming week. I've been looking online and in the papers for a Ram 1500,probably in the 2000-2001 range. There are a lot of high mileage trucks here in Texas. While it would be great to get a used truck with 10,000 miles dirt cheap,I know that pretty unrealistic. What do you think the top end I should be considering for mileage? I know a lot has to do with how well the truck was maintained but is there a limit as to how high to go? Any help would be appreciated.

first of all welcome to DF, magnum motors are very strong motors and will last a very long time. were talking 300,000 + mile range with good care. The only thing I would watch for is the auto trans. There the main problem with these trucks. If you find something run it by us first and let us know what it has. let us know if you need any more information.

Also, if your gonna mod it, I'd look for 99 or older... 4 o2's sucks, 3 cats sucks even more... also beware... good mileage is hard to come by on a Ram... Reed in CO (SilverDodge... I think) was getting 16+ mpg until a gear change, then dropped down to the 14's...

the 4 o2's and 3 cats must be a California thing. If he lives in Texas he may be ok. I have an 01 and it has 2 o2's and 1 cat.

Thanks guys for your responses. The truck I'm looking hard at is a 2001 Ram 1500 QC with 70,000 miles. It has power windows, seats mirrors, cruise, rhinoliner in the bed. They're asking 7,900.

maybe it is... when I was at dodge looking for exhaust parts, the parts breakdown for the 00 ram had 3 cats & 4 o2's so I figured it must be for all of them...

that doesnt sound like a bad price if the truck looks and runs out well.. i have 150,000 on mine and have had only minor problems such as battery.. bulbs.. change your oil and have your trans serviced.. takes special fluid.. atf 4 so prepare.. its kinda pricey.. lol.. does it have the 318 or 360 in it? not much of a difference in the mileage if ya ask me..

Is the truck FWD? It sounds like a really good price..a little too good. Before you buy it here is a few things you might want to do.
Check to see if it has a clean title with carfax or another source
Check the tranny! When you drive it see if it slips any or shifts hard.
Don't be scared to romp on it a little just to see what shape the engine and drivetrain are in.

There are a 100 other things to check if you want but these are to me the most important and basic. The carfax will cost 20.00 but it will be worth it because it tells you alot about the vehicle such as odometer fraud, title status, how many owners the truck has had, also if the vehicle was ever stolen. Just get the vin# and check it out on carfax.com, it will be worth it. The price sounds really good and if it checks out ok then go for it!

01ramclassic,
It's a 2WD. When I started looking for a truck, the first thing I did was get the Carfax subscription for unlimited vehicle checks. It's already saved me. One truck I was looking very hard at came up as having had a major accident and being titled as junk. It's been well worth the $25.00. The truck I'm looking at,is clean all the way around. Joepro it has the 5.2 L engine.
